Fishermen and divers collaborate to collect climate and invasive species data in Portofino MPA

The Portofino Marine Protected Areas staff convened divers clubs and professional and sport fishermen in a seminar organized on 6 February in order to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change and its consequences on marine biodiversity, and the arrival of invasive species to the MPA, as well as to look for their engagement in a data collection programme.

During the seminar, the MPA staff introduced the objectives and activities of the MPA-ADAPT project and the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) explained the climate change effects and the distribution of invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea. Participants in the meeting also discussed on how to apply a similar agreement signed between the Isole Pelagie MPA and a consortium of divers clubs (PADI, DAN) to help the scientific monitoring programme of the MPA-ADAPT project.

Both, divers and fishermen, showed a real interest on the topic of climate change and held a discussion on the right way to be involved in the monitoring programme of the MPA-ADAPT project in collaboration with MPA managers.
