Monitoring climate change impacts in MPA through local knowledge

Five standard monitoring protocols were presented at the Fish Forum 2018

Fishery resources of the Mediterranean Sea are rapidly changing under the pressure of climate change and invasive species, and novel strategies are requested to track the evolution of this phenomenon. Five standards protocols were designed by MPA-ADAPT partners to monitor climate related responses in Mediterranean marine protected areas and beyond.

Two out of the five protocols include access to knowledge that local fishers have on major biodiversity changes in abundances and distribution occurring in their fishing areas, through specific questionnaires that could also help to monitor climate-sensitive species of both native and exotic origin.

A presentation of these protocols was made by our colleagues from ISPRA at the Fish Forum organised by FAO held last December 2018 in Rome, one of the most important meetings of scientists and experts working on fisheries and the marine environment in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
